Seasonal Transitions and Transformations

Persimmon-dates Thanksgiving's just around the corner, and Christmas is just a little over a month away as well. The hybrid of autumn and winter air grows more prominent as we inch closer to the holidays. The full withdrawal from summer causes a shift in the fresh produce that we purchase--maybe not as much for us Californians but a shift most definitely occurs. To name a few, apples, pears, figs, squash, and pumpkin are in season. I love my figs, apples, and squash, but I also enjoy eating persimmons and dates. The dark orange and golden tints of their skin embrace and represent the season quite well. If you remember, last December, I shared a simple recipe to a healthy and scrumptious persimmon snack (click the link!). Chef Travis Lett truly deserves the credit though.

Creamer-decorWhile I am not one to shy away from traditional autumn colors--orange, yellow, red, brown--or flavors, I also like to incorporate some bright, earthy tones.

My mom, who inspires me in countless ways, constantly teaches me the art of transformation. She suggested that we take one of our beautiful creamers, crafted in France, and transform it into a mini-vase. We grabbed a few branches from our berry bush and filled the creamer with them. The contrast between the glossy white and matte forest green adds character to both the room and our vintage cherry red oak bench.

Thank you, everyone, for supporting me and this blog for the past year. If anything, Petite Bites documents much of my journey post-college. My end-goal has always been to empower and inspire people through the simplest means without imposing high costs (I say "high," because time is still a cost!). I promise not to abandon you or Petite Bites even if work becomes increasingly busy. Thank you, again!

Weekend Whims: Play it Cool

WeekendFashionPHOTO CREDITS: StreetPeeper (Phil Oh), COLLAGE: pristine christine (me)

I spy hats, leather, and coats.  Three of my favorites spotted by StreetPeeper Phil Oh!  These ladies know how to coordinate classic with trendy so adeptly, and I would hope that these fashionistas inspire you a much as they inspired me.

If there are two things that occur naturally to me, they would be abridging and analyzing (doubleA!).  Breaking down today's fashion report, I am going to offer you the highlights: 1. BRIGHT SHOES (booties or pumps! Please save yourself the embarrassment from wearing tall boots in grotesque colors) 2. KNEE-LENGTH SKIRTS (perfect with knit sweaters and pumps this Winter) 3. LEATHER PANTS (yes, tuck in the blouse or shirt, girlfriends) 4. HATS (not everyone can pull of hats, but if you love and can kill hats as much as I do, then find your "it" Fall/Winter fedora) 5. COATS (ppsssttt... Isabel Marant x HM...)

I hope all of you find the weather's "cooling down" somewhat pleasant (hopefully, not too troublesome).  I, for one, finally have a reason to cozy up in bed at night.

Happy Veteran's Day!

Where's Wednesday?: In the Pumpkin Patches

Any art activity helps me de-stress, and a completed project usually does more good than harm.  Given that it's Fall and pumpkin season, DIY pumpkin decor is the new craze.  Why not spend the evening feeling productive and creative?  Grab a bottle of tacky glue, gold spray paint, and a bottle of sparkling glitter.  Release the inner child and artist in you without restraints.  If you're like me and prefer minimalism, then try the following options: 1) Paint everything but the stem gold and draw glue lines on the pumpkin ribs. Cover glue with glitter,  OR 2) Spray pain the pumpkin and coat the stem in glitter. DIY_PumpkinNow, even if you're not from a major city (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, etc.), the chances of finding a pumpkin patch nearby are higher than you'd think.  Whether it's for a fun date, family event, or group activity, venturing off to the patches offers both intimacy and pleasure.  I'd skip the heels and go for a pair of derby sneakers (yes, ladies!).

Bottega_Madwell_TheoryWearing my Nike free runs, I like to go for strolls around the neighborhood.  And whenever I do, I see pumpkin-related things decorating the homes and lawns of my neighbors these days.  I relish seeing such a spirited community!  However, I believe in carrying holiday spirits inside as well.  If you love lighting seasonal candles as much as my mom and I, then purchase a Yankee Candle or two from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  The candles from the Fragrance of the Month collection (Apple Pumpkin, Autumn Wreath, Spiced Pumpkin) are 25% off right now.

Cheers to this autumn day!

Monday Musings: Fixing Something Gone Awry

Image

There's something awfully soothing about tea time and the color yellow.  Exerting any negative energy into a positive activity such as boiling a pot of water for tea seems wise in my opinion, especially when things go awry.  Like anyone else, I, too, wake up each morning, hoping to start the day off on the right foot.  Sometimes, though, we encounter the unexpected that may put a damper on our moods.  Today may be one of those days oddly enough.  When preparing my cup of honey ginger tea, I try to remove all pessimism from my heart and say my thanks.  Thank you, Lord, for a new day and for the love surrounding me.  Maybe, I should call this the "Mellow Yellow" effect.  (*Insert audience's laughter*) My ideal Mellow Yellow outfit for Fall? Teasing with some mustard yellow.

Where's Wednesday?: Market Fun

Image Who says going to the market can't be fashion-tastic?  Honestly, carrying my nice leather bags to the market can be a little annoying, especially when I'm picking my fresh produce.  Had I seen these adorable, pragmatic totes before, I would have snagged one already.  West Elm sells a variety of market totes, but the ones above are a few of my favorites.  The best part?  They are made in the U.S.A. and cost only $18!  Other than carrying them to the market, you can store your laptop in them as well.  You hit two birds with one stone!  Personally, lugging my InCase bag to the coffee shop just for my laptop can be troublesome at times, so this is good news for me.  Who could hate such a steal?  Grab a tote while they're still available!

Growing up, the sandbox never appealed to me. Even now, I wrinkle my nose at the thought of playing in one.  My playground, unfortunately, is Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.  Despite frequenting Trader Joe's every week, I am always still delighted by the products sitting on the shelves.  Our familly's seasonal favorite from the store is the pumpkin bread mix.  Normally, my mom uses walnuts and dried cranberry, but because we ran out of the latter ingredient, we decided to improvise: walnuts, pecans, and raisins.  1/4 of the mixture wasn't topped with extra nuts since my rather fastidious brother has changing preferences.  While the bread baked in the oven, the fall scent of pumpkin spice permeated the living room... and I loved it!

1 Pumpkin Bread Mix 2 large eggs 1/2 cup vegetable or canola oil 1 cup water 1 cups of walnuts 1 cup of pecans *margarine (use butter if you wish, but we prefer healthier alternates) optional: 1/2 cup dried cranberry

*Rather than mixing the margarine with the bread mixture, we coat the pan with margarine.

12 servings Calories per serving: 230 (using butter but fewer if using margarine) 18g sugar per serving

Save yourself the atrocious calories and sugar in the bread sold at stores and Starbucks by baking some right at home.  If you want to treat yourself to an even healthier alternative, buy the pumpkin bar mix. You'll be clocking in only 160 calories per serving.

Happy Wednesday, my beautiful readers!

Throwback Thursday: Gettin' Ready for School

TBT_Backpack

Top (left to right): Herschel Settlement Mid-Volume $55; MCM $540; Essl 'Austrian' backpack $124 Bottom (left to right): Baggu Backpack in Fig $42; Jansport Hoffan $40; Herschel Pop Quiz Backpack $70

Nowadays, it's difficult finding a mid-size backpack under $40.  Talk about inflation, increasing costs, and the principles of supply of demand.

Since pre-school, going back-to-school shopping has always been like visiting a candy store for me.  I have to try hard to resist the temptation of buying every nice pencil case, backpack, notebook, folder, and pen.  The one thing I adore about backpacks is their customizability, practicality, and durability (4 years on average).  Because I like to stand out, I always bought mine in eye-catching colors. In high school, I carried a baby pink Jansport, so I stood out in the crowd; in college, I owned a beautiful hot-pink Jansport.  From even half a mile away, you could spot me.  While I am an avid follower and admirer of fashion, I don't believe in lugging around laptops and school supplies in shoulder bags or totes.  Thus, to help you ease the pain of being trendy without looking dorky at school, I selected a few of my personal favorite packs, ranging from $40 to $540.  I'm all about finding the right tone that showcases personality and that perseveres seasons (neon is rarely fitting for Fall).

Getting ready for school also suggests kicking out the junk food and bringing in the nutritious goodies.  #tbt!  Snack of nostalgia: Wheat Crisps with Dip

Snackin' Right: 1. Wheat Crisps (Trader Joe's Reduced Guilt Wheat Crisps: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XT_OAL8QRt0/TUi0q0ukmXI/AAAAAAAABVc/6bCetXLh0mw/s1600/IMG_7195.1.jpg) 2. Trader Joe's Spinach and Kale Greek Yogurt Dip (http://www.whatsgoodattraderjoes.com/2012/09/trader-joes-spinach-kale-greek-yogurt.html)

14 wheat crisps (140 calories) + 4 tbsp of dip (60 calories) = 200 filling calories (avoid consuming empty calories)

My parents, especially, my mom would always say to me, "College years are your best years. Enjoy them to the fullest."  How true her words remain.  I just graduated from college 2 months ago, and I already miss scrambling to ship boxes of belongings to Chicago and catching flights to reunite with best friends.  However, life moves on, and I must learn to continue friendships even if we're all dispersed across the country. C'est la vie.

Happy Back-to-School!

Get ready for some fun Friday Fashion tomorrow! Until then...
